The photographs of the German Shepherds dog taken years ago, to many people today, might seem plain, somewhat thin and a little scruffy.
It was the dog named Hektor (Horand), seen below, that inspired von Stephanitz to begin his program to further develop the breed, which he did up until his death.
The strictest of breeding programs were adhered to, however, temperament was just as important as the physical stucture.This is a picture of a German Shepherds dog taken in the year 1919.
"Breeding wardens", assisted in making sure that the rules of the breeding guidelines were met.
Their introduction and popularity into other countries was nearly the ruin of the breed.
