I have been training dogs for 31 years now. I hesitate to use the word trainer because I do not consider myself a dog trainer, but rather a dog person. This last year I have worked with several different people and their dogs and have found an energy and renewed love for this thing we call the work. The "magic" that we so often overlook or deny or permit others to rob us of, is very much alive in this work. I have watched it carefully work its way into the fabric of the lives I have come in contact with over my lifetime. Sometimes it comes out in the beginning as a smile and great exuberance for this work. Other times it begins in the form of discouragement causing questions that will eventually lead to the answers so needed in that life. It is the dog and the dog alone that makes each walk begin and becomes the comfortor and guardian along the way. From where I stand it is also a very spiritual form of learning. Within each of us is a desire to communicate with each other and ourselves. Again the dog proves to be the ambassador needed to bring this about. Think about a world without the dog and it would be both lonely and bleak. We have a responsibility to maintain these working breeds as best we can. The future is in our hands.
