A young pup is like an empty canvas. Before we start applying the paint we must first have a clear picture in our head as to what it is we desire to paint. I have found giving advice with the written word very difficult. When on a training field I can explain in word and in action of movement I will try here to put into words what I feel should be done with a pup I will in a day or so have two very young pups with me constantly. Yet I must find time and communication with each pup separately. This is not difficult because I know where it is I want to end up with these pups. It is that destination that provides the very first steps of the journey. Direction must be maintained or I will sidestep and so will they. If I am honest with myself I will be honest in my journey. We and we alone effect the pups. Genetics already have, we may not see their influence entirely yet, but as we proceed we will. If I say I want these pups to herd cattle I must take them down that path. If they are to be scent dogs I must take them down that path. I will eventually bump into genetics along the way. Some time ago, I watched Crufts dog show and I Hounds that never scented the air nor paid attention to their surroundings. Yet they were called champion hounds. A human hand hasled them to this place. A thought,a desire. No matter how negative I may believe it to be, it is true. The dog followed the desire of the handler. They were no longer the hounds of the field running behind the game they pursued, baying to indicate presence of scent or distance of prey. No, they had become empty vessels and objects of a twisted vanity. Why? Desire. Human desire. The picture perceived was of ribbons and cash. Desire and the will to carry it out. Positive or negative, it remains the truth. Know where you want your pup to go and take him there. Let no one stand in the way and you will be surprised at what you will achieve. To have control you must take control. If that means thelead on to maintain attention when they are young, so be it. Yet it must be done honestly and with purpose and reason. We embark with a new canvas with each new pup. We have all the old paints. It is so very simple, yet so often elusive. The dog is the most incredible creature, so sensitive to our emotion, so responsive to our needs. Be sure you know your needs clearly. The response is a sure thing. Be firm but be fair. Never do anything for show but for purpose and never betray the pup on human whim. Remember a young pup eagerly follows a young child. The reason for that is the child is real. The purpose is simply the walk
