Editorial # 18

Legislating Dogs

The following is an article written by Mike, giving us an insight into the personal side of one mans love for dogs.

It is very obvious in today's society that somehow logic and responsibility have taken a back door and remain in the annals of our social history.

People today close there eyes as our rights and freedoms are legislated away from us and they will set their eyes on foolish rights such as the right to pet a stranger's dog or the right to walk across private property. It is no wonder the very dogs we breed reflect and mirror our social upheaval, yet if we remain calm and take a deep breath we can and must correct that which is possible to correct.

It is not up to our government or our teachers to teach morals and family values to our children. By the same token, it is not up to the yuppy dog breeders to dictate rules. Because they do not like the name of kennel, give it the name of puppy motel, who believe it o.k. for children to starve in the streets, yet have doggy restaurants for their little poodles to dine in.

We have sat still and permitted very innocent groups to be destroyed. The utmost and most important is our children, the second is our dogs. We stand confused in the middle of the battle.

It is this very point that is too important for all of us who believe in the dog human bond, the very point that human life is more valuable and more precious than that of a dog. It is only when we realize this, that the dog can take its natural place beside man.

We as humans have bred more diseases, more health problems, and more weak nerves in our dogs, in the name of love, than we care to admit. Our entire being is out of balance. At no time in history has so much money been spent on dogs, cats, horses and birds, as well as other pets, while so much human suffering is so visible in our daily lives.

Many people will read this and ask what my point is. My point is that just as the sun comes up in the morning and set's in the evening, just as the seasons change, there is a natural place for dogs and there is a natural place for man.

When man is not willing to stand in his natural place, those lesser creatures will find no peace in their's. Just think of a world without a dog. If we keep going the way we are it is not that far away.

Those dogs, which are not legislated out of existence, will succumb to the diseases that we have bred into them. In my short lifetime so many working and sporting breeds are no longer capable of performing the tasks that their breed once did so easily.

I shudder to think what the next fifty years will bring.

Weakness is also a natural thing as is strength but when we as a race accommodate weakness or try and make it into strength, we do nothing but cause destruction.
