Editorial # 21

Time

The following is another article written by Mike.

We live in very fast paced world.
Much too often we do not stop to communicate with each other. It stands to reason that if we as human beings fail to communicate with other human beings, than we are failing to communicate with our dogs.

The art of communication is ancient.

There was a time when we did not talk over telephones or other electronic devices, when we had to speak directly to each other and we had to be very aware of the subtle changes in facial expressions and body mannerisms.
The capabilities in us to communicate this way were instinctive, in fact, they were natural instincts.

For whatever reason, and I am sure there are many, our social structure has caused these natural instincts to dull and almost disappear. The truth is we are sharper, more respectful, more dedicated and much more aware when we are using our natural instincts. Perhaps this is why it is so important that they be dulled.
Our dogs suffer greatly.

There was a time when we were very aware of their body language and subtle ways of communication. You see their natural instincts and our natural instincts flowed in unison.
Through breeding, poor breeding, and the acceptance of foolish stupid people and their so-called animal intelligence theories, these instincts have also been dulled.

The magic in life is in its simplicity.
Plant a seed, give it nourishment and it will grow. Whether it is a weed or flower it will grow. It is the same in the animal world. Plant a seed of strength and it will grow. Plant a seed of weakness and it will grow.
We would not permit the weeds to overcome the harvest. Yet we continuously permit people to breed weakness into our working dogs.

That is tragic enough, but when you mix weak people and weak dogs this is truly a formula for disaster.

We are a race that does not like the truth.
We walk around it step over it, crawl under it but sooner or later we will come face to face with it.

The fact is some of us should not own the large working breeds. Many of us should not breed the large working breeds. Every day more and more dogs of weak nerve and crippled body, get registered or titled and are bred because of this.
The final disaster, the elimination of the working dog grows closer and closer.

I can remember in years gone by as a young man sitting on a veranda listening to stories told by veterans of world war one. My father leaned over to me and said you "wanna listen to these guys because soon this generation will be lost to us forever and remember, that you are sitting among giants."

I am now saying to you that soon we will have to remember this type of dog, the magic in the communication and dedication and that we once had the privilege of walking with them.
In my short lifetime I have seen my four legged friends being destroyed before my eyes, by would-be experts, that are ignorant of the truths of life.

We cannot keep taking without putting something back.

For all of those who read this and understand this, it is time to put something back or it is time to stop taking.
Once these dogs are gone, our best friends are gone.
