ANGLES OF MERCY
The problem of violence in our society is a very disturbing and frustrating one.
The Working Service Dog has confidently taken his place in the capacity of a security system.
It is very important to note that although the Working Service Dog is very capable in a role as guardian and companion to the many victims of violent crime, this is by no means his only, nor his main purpose, in life.
We must remember that he is still a Working Service Dog fulfilling a role. His training and ability combined, make use of all his natural abilities to track, defend, locate lost articles and to always be a good citizen. This makes this calling possible.
Another important role that the K9 is being called on more and more is, to perform as a therapy dog. Visiting the sick and elderly in hospitals and nursing homes.
Reaching out, in supernatural ability, touching the hearts and souls of those whose need is great. The dog often surpasses man's ability with bedside manners and medicines, again performing a great service to mankind.
When we think of Search and Rescue work we think of tragic conditions such as earthquakes or wilderness areas and man made disasters. Here again the Working Service Dog is capable of performing this type of task in the physical sense. Yet more often they assist in the recovery of those of us who suffer personal tragedies as well and giving support and courage to those who need it most. Helping to rescue people from the often lost and lonely places they retreat to, when faced with great loss or tragedy.
The Working Service Dog is not for everyone nor is it a solution to all life's problems.
The training, handling and philosophy of Working Service is both physically and physiologically demanding. It is this very factor that set these dogs and their human counterparts apart from and above, the tasks of life.
I train working service dogs and their handlers and I am constantly reminded that I have much to learn in the wonderfully mysterious work of the dogs ability to live with and to serve man.
The Working Service Dog is truly a gift to be treasured in a world, which is often cold and lonely.
Service is what they perform with dignity and courage.
The Working Service Dog is a four-legged angle of mercy.
