SOMETIMES, MAYBE
The news today tells of a boy in England being sent home for wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The reason given was that "He might intimidate other students". From Germany we hear of a bakery opening for dogs: from Africa children are still starving and dying. Iraq is on fire, Afghanistan is beginning to fight back and Iran continues to build a bomb they will launch against Israel or America. The hooded sweatshirt somehow does not seem so intimidating.
Sometimes I wonder not so much who we are, rather, who we have become. When did we surrender our common sense? When did we choose weakness and meekness over liberty and freedom? While we eat chips beside our fat bakery fed dogs, children starve and die. The spandex crowd has lulled us into the land of nod.
Maybe while we are at war, we should fight and not be used to direct traffic. Our warriors are trained to fight. Let them fight. When I send my dog to bite, I want him to bite or I don't send him.
Boys, warriors need not feel sorry for being warriors. They should be led into battle by warriors. Not into folly by beurocrats. Sometimes maybe the little dogs should just stay in the yard where it's safe, and let the big dogs do what they do best. Then the bakeries will be crowded with children wearing hooded sweatshirts, and nobody will be intimidated.
